BEST ATHLETES OF THE 60'S
In the 1960's sports became very popular. The most popular sport of the 60's was baseball. Alpine skiing, figure skating, and women's golf became much more popular. Some more sports included harness racing, boxing, baseball, football, cycling, swimming, tennis, and volleyball. In 1960 there were 2 Olympic games held. The winter games were held in in Saquaw Valley. Some U.S. good winners were he U.S. ice hockey team, David Jenkins and Carol Heiss in figure skating, The summer games were held in Rome. The gold medalists were: Otis Davis (400m), Glenn Davis (400m hurdles), William Nieder (shot put), Al Oerter (discus). Wilma Rudoph won gold in the 100m and the 200m runs. Muhammad Ali won a gold medal as light heavyweight boxer. Men's basketball team also won in gold.
In 1964 the winter games were held in Austria, the summer games were held in Tokyo. The US athletes came out victorious in many events in the 1964 summer Olympics such as, the men's basketball team won once again. Other events like the 10,000m, 200m, shot put and discus received gold medals also. The men's 400m relay set a world record that summer Olympic games.
In 1968 the winter Olympics were in France and the summer games were in Mexico City. For the winter games Peggy Grenoble won gold for her figure skating performance.
Besides the Olympic games being very popular, professional sports were a big hit. Baseball was very popular; major stars were Willie Mays, Roberto Clemente and Bob Gibson. Pitcher, Sandy Koufax wont the Cy Young award in 1963, 1965 and 1966. In tennis, Arthur Ashe was the first African American to win the U.S. tennis championship in 1968. A big swing was Arnold Palmer, a very well-known golfer. Sports were a big deal that had many more famous athletes in other sports including basketball, football, ect.
